Tales From The Town #184: A Fort

The fort stood halfway up the hill at the end of the garden, as far beyond the swings as the swings were from the house. It was constructed from four deckchairs, one picnic blanket, two beach towels, someone’s t-shirt, three shoes and a stone. Its current supplies consisted of two jam sandwiches, one apple, and a packet of quavers, two water pistols, three quarters of a bucket of ammunition (paddling pool water), plus a colouring book, three pens, two dolls, and a plastic tea set (imaginary tea optional).

Their enemies occupied the Wendy House, and woud be resisted at all costs (up to and including getting soaked by water bombs).

The Castle

The castle used to be covered in thorns. Now the castle is dust yet the thorns still remain.

The Castle

Last night I dreamt I was lost in a castle
lingering there in the mist
and the fog and the darkness and the snow

and when I woke up this morning
the sun was shining
and the castle was gone

but still I felt the same

A castle covered not in thorns

a castle covered not in thorns
but those pointless lights on the patio
their rusted wires
as cursed as our hearts

Tale #120: While The Peasants Tended Their Trees

Once upon a time a king and queen lived in their castle, and tended to their selves, while in their gardens the peasants slept in tents, and tended to their trees.

In the spring an ill wind blew, and the castle closed its gate, and while those within the castle waited quietly until it had passed, those outside were left to fend for themselves.

Autumn came, and the fruit fell from those forgotten trees. In the coming weeks it rotted in the sun, until the whole land choked beneath the stench of putrefaction. But by then there were none to smell it, and all was silent, except for the rustling of the wind in the leaves.

Or so the story goes.
