Now this morning my Lord spoke to me of his most recent dream. And he said, “My dear scribe, last night as I slept, I dreamt. And in this dream I swam across the sea. And the sky above was as grey as the waters below. And the rain that fell on me from above was as warm as the waters that soaked me from below. And the air above was as suffocating as the waters below, yet still I tried to breathe. And below in the depths I saw a forest of arms reaching up to catch me, while above there was nothing but the circling birds, waiting patiently until the time came for them to feed.”

The Thirty Ninth Dream Of The Waiting Prince
This morning my Lord spoke to me of his dream of the night before. And he said to me, “My dear scribe, last night as I slept, I dreamt. And this dream was as unsettling to me as the Lament Of Shattering Glass, for in it I came to an abandoned house. And from the house there flowed a river of blood, which turned the wheels of its mill. And within the house there sat a phantom with blazing eyes, who sat upon a throne of rusted metal. And this phantom showed to me his work, for at his feet there sat a bucket. And from this bucket, in each hand, he plucked a screaming child, and on the mill he placed them. And while he bent then to pick more children from the pail, the mill did grind these first two apart. And as their blood ran down into the river that turned the wheel that turned the stones that ground their bodies apart, their flesh and bones slid along a sluice. And as it did I noticed something strange, for this flesh was not dead, but alive, and as it writhed it reformed before my eyes, one part here of one joining with one part there of another, so by the time these lumps of flesh had reached the bottom of this ramp they had formed themselves into something new. And as these children drew their first breaths they fell from the ramp, into the bucket at the phantoms feet, beneath his throne of rusted metal. And from this bucket, in each hand, he plucked a screaming child, and on the mill he placed them, so that the turning of the stones ground their bodies apart.”

And when I woke, I sought out my scribe, and spoke to her of my dream of the night before.”
The Thirty Seventh Dream Of The Waiting Prince
This morning, my Lord spoke to me, and told me of his most recent dream. And he said to me, “My dear scribe, last night as I slept, I dreamt. And in this dream, my mothers sang to me their songs of love. And my sisters sang to me their songs of admiration. And my brothers sang to me their songs of jealousy. And my lovers sang to me their songs of submission. And the people sang to me their songs of fear. And our enemies sang to me their songs of war. And my advisors sang to me their lies. And my father simply sat like stone in the silence of his power.”
The Thirty Sixth Dream Of The Waiting Prince
This morning my Lord spoke to me of his dream of the night before. And he said to me, “My dear scribe, last night as I slept, I dreamt. And this dream was as dark as the air of the Final Tomb, for in it I stood upon the Plains Of The Lifeless Sea, and tried to count for myself the stars in the sky, so as to enumerate the extent of my Empire to come. Yet each time I pointed to a star, it disappeared before my gaze, as did the next, and the next, and the next, until the sky itself was as empty as my heart. And even then it did not stop, for next the planets faded, and then the moons, and the ships in the sky, and the fires of my camp, and the glints in our eyes, until there were no points of light above nor any below.”
The Thirty Fifth Dream Of The Waiting Prince
Now this morning my Lord told me of his dream of the night before. And he said to me, “My dear scribe, last night as I slept, I dreamt. And in this dream I studied the patterns the waves had left upon the sand. And I studied the patterns the sand had scoured in the rocks. And I studied the patterns the rocks had gouged within the earth. And I studied the patterns the earth had made as it flowed through the valleys. And I studied the patterns the valleys made as they channelled the rain into rivers. And I studied the patterns the rivers made as they snaked across the plains. And I studied the patterns the plains made as they were divided up into farms. And I studied the patterns the farmers made as they planted their crops. And I studied the patterns the crops formed as they were harvested by the machinery of men. And I studied the patterns the machinery of men made as they transported their cargo across the world. And all of these patterns looked to me like the patterns made by the growths of mould, as it spreads across the stone surfaces of the ruins of our past.”
The Thirty Fourth Dream Of The Waiting Prince
Now this morning my Lord told me of his dream of the night before. And he said to me, “My dear scribe, last night as I slept, I dreamt. And I watched the turning wheel of the clock, that showed the tides of the day, as they rotated round the centre of the ocean. And this was set in a larger wheel, that showed the movement of the oceans, as the earth rotated around its axis. And this was set in a larger wheel, that showed the orbit of the earth, as it moved around the sun. And this was set in a larger wheel, that showed the orbit of the sun around the centre of the galaxy. And this was set in a larger wheel, that showed the orbit of the galaxy around the centre of the universe. And this was set in a larger wheel, that showed the movement of the universe among the bubbles of its brethren. And this was set in a larger wheel, that showed the bubbles of its brethren in the waves of the morning tide. And this was set in a larger wheel, that showed the tides of the day, as they rotated about the centre of the ocean.”
The Thirty Third Dream Of The Waiting Prince
Now this morning my Lord recounted to me his dream of the night before. And he said to me, “My dear scribe, last night as I slept, I dreamt. And this dream was as confounding as the mysteries of the Forgotten Scholars, which so perplex those of us wise enough to study their writings. For in this dream I had before me my advisors, and the first of them said to me, “You can trust me, my Lord, for unlike these others, I shall not lie to you.” And then I moved down the line, and the second of my advisors said to me, “You can trust me, my Lord, for unlike these others, I shall not lie to you.” And then I moved down the line, and the third of my advisors said to me, “You can trust me, my Lord, for unlike these others, I shall not lie to you.” And then I moved down the line, and the fourth of my advisors said to me, “You can trust me, my Lord, for unlike these others, I shall not lie to you.” And then I moved down the line, and the fifth of my advisors said to me, “You can trust me, my Lord, for unlike these others, I shall not lie to you.” And then I moved down the line, and the sixth of my advisors said to me, “You can trust me, my Lord, for unlike these others, I shall not lie to you.” And then I moved down the line, and the seventh of my advisors said to me, “You can trust me, my Lord, for unlike these others, I shall not lie to you.” And then I moved down the line, and the eighth of my advisors said to me, “You can trust me, my Lord, for unlike these others, I shall not lie to you.” And then I moved down the line, and the ninth of my advisors said to me, “You can trust me, my Lord, for unlike these others, I shall not lie to you.” And then I moved down the line, and the tenth of my advisors said to me, “You can trust me, my Lord, for unlike these others, I shall not lie to you.” And then I moved down the line, and the eleventh of my advisors said to me, “You can trust me, my Lord, for unlike these others, I shall not lie to you.” And then I moved down the line, and the twelfth of my advisors said to me, “You can trust me, my Lord, for unlike these others, I shall not lie to you.” And then I moved down the line, and the thirteenth of my advisors said to me, “You can trust me, my Lord, for unlike these others, I shall not lie to you.”
The Thirty Second Dream Of The Waiting Prince
Now my Lord spoke to me of his dream of the night before. And he said to me, “Last night as I slept, I dreamt. And in this dream, I was offered a choice between luxury and power. And I chose power.”
The Thirty First Dream Of The Waiting Prince
This morning my Lord recounted to me his most recent dream, which had occurred the night before. And he said to me, “My dear scribe, last night as I slept, I dreamt. And in this dream, I came to you, to tell you my most recent dream, that had occurred the night before. But when I tried to speak, no words came from my mouth, for I had been alone in my solitude for so long, all language had fled from my tongue, and from my mind, and from my heart. Yet still you wrote upon the pages of the scroll.”
