The Hundred And Twentieth Dream Of The Waiting Prince

This morning I told my Lord of my dream of the night before. And to him I said, “My dear Lord, last night as you slept, I dreamt. And in this dream, I came to you, to tell you of my most recent dream. But when I tried to speak, no words came from my mouth, for you have been asleep so long, I no longer have cause to talk aloud, and speak only within the confines of my own mind. And it is there you write these words of mine upon the pages of the scroll, every bit as clearly as I say them to you.”

The Hundred And Eighteenth Dream Of The Waiting Prince

Now this morning I told my Lord of last night’s dream. And I said to him, “My dear Lord, last night as you slept, I dreamt. And this dream was as confounding as any riddle of the Poets, for in it I was sat upon the Widow’s Throne, and before me stood a line of my most honoured suitors. And the first suitor said to me, “You can trust me with your heart, my dear Queen, for unlike these others I shall love only you.” And then the second suitor approached, and said to me, “You can trust me with your heart, my dear Queen, for unlike these others I shall love only you.” And then the third suitor approached, and said to me, “You can trust me with your heart, my dear Queen, for unlike these others I shall love only you.” And then the fourth suitor approached, and said to me, “You can trust me with your heart, my dear Queen, for unlike these others I shall love only you.” And then the fifth suitor approached, and said to me, “You can trust me with your heart, my dear Queen, for unlike these others I shall love only you.” And then the sixth suitor approached, and said to me, “You can trust me with your heart, my dear Queen, for unlike these others I shall love only you.” And then the seventh suitor approached, and said to me, “You can trust me with your heart, my dear Queen, for unlike these others I shall love only you.” And then the eighth suitor approached, and said to me, “You can trust me with your heart, my dear Queen, for unlike these others I shall love only you.” And then the ninth suitor approached, and said to me, “You can trust me with your heart, my dear Queen, for unlike these others I shall love only you.” And then the tenth suitor approached, and said to me, “You can trust me with your heart, my dear Queen, for unlike these others I shall love only you.” And then the eleventh suitor approached, and said to me, “You can trust me with your heart, my dear Queen, for unlike these others I shall love only you.” And then the twelfth suitor approached, and said to me, “You can trust me with your heart, my dear Queen, for unlike these others I shall love only you.” And then the thirteenth suitor approached, and said to me, “You can trust me with your heart, my dear Queen, for unlike these others I shall love only you.”

The Hundred And Seventeenth Dream Of The Waiting Prince

Now this morning I told my Lord of my dream of the night before. And I said to him, “My dear Lord, last night as you slept, I dreamt. And in this dream I watched the stars wheel across the sky. And I watched the clouds pass from horizon to horizon. And I felt the winds blow across the oceans. And I saw the people move from country to country, city to town, house to home. And I saw friends become lovers, lovers become parents, children become friends. And all the while, I never once moved from this Palace, never once left your side.”

The Hundred And Sixteenth Dream Of The Waiting Prince

Now this morning to my Lord I spoke of last night’s dream. And to him I said, “My dear Lord, last night as you slept, I dreamt. And in this dream I studied the patterns our footprints made in the dirt. And I studied the patterns our paths made through the streets of the city. And I studied the patterns our roads made across the land. And I studied the patterns our ships made across the seas. And I studied the patterns our planes made across the skies. And I studied the patterns our rockets made between the worlds. And I studied the patterns our knowledge made as it was broadcast across the galaxy. And I studied the patterns of the galaxies as they danced around each other over time. And all of these looked to me like the patterns of our tears, as they run untouched across the surface of our skin.”

The Hundred And Fifteenth Dream Of The Waiting Prince

Now this morning I told my Lord of last night’s dream. And I said to him, “My dear Lord, last night as you slept, I dreamt. And this dream was as bright as the voids of heaven, for in it I lay beneath the ever expanding sun, counting down the seconds until it enveloped me. Yet though with each passing second the horizons of its expanse moved immeasurably further apart, such was its distance above, only in aeons could you measure how long it would take to reach us. And so though with each beat of my heart it engulfed more stars than I could count, it would take more lives than I could live before I felt its warmth. And within its whiteness I saw flecks of shadow, signs I imagined of resistance on some galactic scale, reduced to little more than motes in the corners of my eyes, remnants of some other dream beyond the scope of my own.”

The Hundred And Fourteenth Dream Of The Waiting Prince

This morning I told my Lord of my most recent dream. And I said to him, “Last night as you slept, I dreamt. And in this dream my sisters comforted me in my grief. And in this dream my daughters comforted me in my despondency. And in this dream my sons comforted me in my anger. And in this dream my lovers comforted me in my loneliness. And in this dream my nurses comforted me in my confusion. And in this dream my husband comforted me in no way at all.”

The Hundred And Thirteenth Dream Of The Waiting Prince

Now this morning I told my Lord of my most recent dream. And to him I said, “My dear Lord, last night as you slept, I dreamt. And when you woke, I said to you, “My dear Lord, last night as you slept, I dreamt. And when you woke, I said to you, “My dear Lord, last night as you slept, I dreamt. The Hundred And Twelfth Dream Of The Waiting Prince

This morning I spoke to my Lord of my most recent dream. And I said to him, “My dear Lord, last night as you slept, I dreamt. And in this dream I saw the horrors of civilisation laid uncommonly bare. Not by the removal of any veil, that had previously hidden these things from view, but by the removal of the constraints of time, so that I could witness things beyond the here and now, and so see the structure that housed the whole. And I saw then a million generations of humanity, across a billion years, witnessed a trillion lives, all now lost, all now forgotten, all as irrelevant to today as the waves that shape our shores, and as relentless, as unending, as ignorant of any waves that broke before, as unconcerned by any that shall break behind. For as long as the worlds rotate beneath their suns, so shall these waves rise and fall, and so long as there is life shall there be death, and as long as there is memory, so shall we lament the loss of it. And so long as there is an Empire, shall we live this pretence of civilisation.”

The Hundred And Eleventh Dream Of The Waiting Prince

Now this morning I told my Lord of my dream of the night before. And I said to him, “My dear Lord, last night as you slept, I dreamt. And in this dream, amidst the falling snow, I walked across a frozen lake. And the ice below was as pale as the sky above. And the air that chilled my breath before me was as cold as the ice that froze my feet beneath me. And in the sky above I saw a sea of hands reaching down to strike me, their claws like icicles, and in the lake I could see shoals of fish, locked below the ice until spring. Yet they knew not that anything for them had changed, for the waters they swam in were the prisons of their lives.”
