We got The Box for Christmas, a joint present for each other. It sits there on the table, pulsing, glowing, trembling, flickering, wrapping paper still spread around it like a nest. We knew The Box was all the rage these days, but we weren\u2019t particularly impressed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t see what this does that the The Cube didn\u2019t,\u201d she said. It was her idea to get one so I was feeling kind of vindicated but not an \u00a3899 kind of vindicated.<\/p>\n
\u201cOr The Vase,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is much better than The fucking Vase,\u201d she said. \u201cThat thing was so impractical. One little touch and it\u2019d fall over and spill emergence fluid everywhere. It might have been cheap to buy but it was so expensive to run.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah, but it had charm,\u201d I said. I bloody loved The Vase. I really did. \u201cA sort of style you know. And portability. We could take it round your Mums. This Box is just\u2026 a box.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cA stable box that doesn\u2019t run on fucking AAA batteries,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut it\u2019s so utilitarian,\u201d I said, sighing wistfully. \u201cRemember when technology was exciting. Now it\u2019s just the same, but newer.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAt least this doesn\u2019t accidentally merge its extrusions,\u201d she said, shuddering at the memory of some half-remembered Christmas now long past. <\/p>\n
\u201cI quite liked merged extrusions,\u201d I said quietly. <\/p>\n
\u201cI never want to see a merged extrusion ever again in my life,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
I hoped one day soon they\u2019d bring The Vase back as a retro thing, merged extrusions and all. I\u2019d have to keep it hidden away somewhere she\u2019d never find it, but yeah, it could work. They were pretty portable after all.<\/p>\n
