It\u2019s the worst moon ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is,\u201d said Claire. \u201cThe best moon is the moon that\u2019s always on fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the sun, Claire,\u201d said Ethel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot it\u2019s not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t. If it was the sun you wouldn\u2019t be able to see it at night but you can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>You<\/em> can\u2019t,\u201d said Claire. \u201cI can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe actual best moon,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cIs the moon made of metal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not a <em>real<\/em> moon,\u201d said Claire. \u201cIt\u2019s made up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>You\u2019re<\/em> made up,\u201d said Ethel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNor\u2019s the moon made of metal,\u201d said Daniel. \u201cIt\u2019s just you have to be in <em>Australia<\/em> to see it. They have different stars and everything!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve never been to Australia, Daniel,\u201d said Claire. \u201cOr New Zealand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnna\u2019s been to Australia,\u201d said Ethel. \u201cAnd New Zealand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, good for her,\u201d said Claire. \u201cI still don\u2019t think Daniel\u2019s favourite moon should be a moon he\u2019s never seen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour favourite moon is a moon <em>we\u2019ve<\/em> never seen,\u201d said Ethel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy favourite moon is the ghost moon,\u201d said Tina. Everyone thought she was asleep but she wasn\u2019t at all. \u201cI\u2019ve seen that. Twice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen it, too,\u201d said Ethel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve all seen it,\u201d said Claire. \u201cAnd anyway there\u2019s no such thing as a ghost moon. It\u2019s the <em>apparition<\/em> moon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s just another word for ghost,\u201d said Ethel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not. It\u2019s totally different,\u201d Claire said. \u201cAnd why would there be two words for one thing, anyway? It\u2019d be completely confusing!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd bemusing,\u201d said Tina, quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost perplexing,\u201d said Ethel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConfoundingly mystifying,\u201d added Daniel. \u201cDiscombobulatingly flummoxational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone shut up,\u201d said Claire. \u201cThose aren\u2019t even words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She flopped back down on the bed and banged her fists against the mattress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd we\u2019re supposed to be watching the silly old moon, remember?\u201d Claire shouted up at the sky. \u201cNot <em>talking<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The four of them lay quietly on the bed and stared up at that mysterious new window of theirs. The moon shone through the glass like a beacon, huge and full and as bright as snow. It seemed to fill the entirety of the sky.
