The crows gathered on the roof of the house. A hundred of them or more, all in a row, a cacophony of caws as they jostled for position amongst the crowd. On observing this event, many of the wisest sages and scholars from the town pondered the exact meaning of such an occurrence.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook at all the crows!\u201d said Ethel. \u201cI wonder what they\u2019re all doing up there?\u201d \u201cI bet they\u2019re hungry,\u201d said Tina. \u201cAnd now they\u2019re looking for food.\u201d \u201cCrows eat eyeballs,\u201d Daniel said seriously. \u201cDead eyeballs.\u201d That was all he knew about crows. \u201cOur house must smell of rotting meat then,\u201d Claire said. \u201cWe must live in a house of dead flesh!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA gathering of crows like that means there\u2019s going to be a storm,\u201d Agnes called out to the children as they played on the swing. \u201cYou better all come inside before you get wet. I\u2019ll make some hot chocolate and we can watch the lightning through the window.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAn ominous warning,\u201d the witch said, as she watched through her telescope from afar, in the comfort of her cottage, in the safety of the woods. \u201cA portent for the horrors to come.\u201d She cackled so gleefully the dolls covered their ears.<\/p>\n

Back at the house, the crows, unaware of the speculation over the purpose of their existence, slid one by one down the icy gutter as if it was a slide, then joined the back of the queue to wait for another go.<\/p>\n
