\u201cIt\u2019s not a rock. It\u2019s the whale<\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it\u2019s the whale, why isn\u2019t it moving?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause it\u2019s dead!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it was dead it\u2019d sink,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s bones would become a castle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor mermaids!\u201d Ethel said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMermaids don\u2019t exist, Ethel,\u201d Claire said. \u201cAnd dead things float, Daniel!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whale is not dead, Claire,\u201d Tina said. \u201cSo stop saying it is. I\u2019ll get upset.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re always getting upset,\u201d Claire said. She sat down on the grass with the others and started brushing her hair. \u201cAnyway, maybe it is a stupid rock AND<\/strong> the whale is dead. That way we can both be unhappy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I be unhappy?\u201d Ethel asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, that\u2019s not fair at all,\u201d Ethel said.<\/p>\n

They all sat there in silence, and dreamt of whales, bones, castles, mermaids.<\/p>\n
