There was a slide under the stairs. They didn\u2019t know where it went. They didn\u2019t have a cellar or a basement. Or, at least, they hadn’t before.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not going down that slide,\u201d Ethel said. \u201cNot ever!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re scared!\u201d Claire said triumphantly. \u201cI\u2019m not scared.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are!\u201d Ethel said. \u201cYou\u2019re just pretending you aren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not!\u201d Look! I\u2019ll show you!\u201d<\/p>\n

And with that Claire sat down on the slide and slid off into the dark. It took a while, but eventually her screams faded out to nothingness.<\/p>\n

No-one spoke for a very long time. They thought they could hear Claire calling, but it was just Anna and Oya having tea in the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019m not going down there to find out where\u2019s gone,\u201d Tina said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo am I,\u201d Ethel agreed. \u201cNot ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDaniel?\u201d Tina asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNah.\u201d<\/p>\n

The three of them went off to play in the garden.<\/p>\n
