Agnes was in the kitchen when she heard the music in the distance. A chill ran down her spine. She closed the laptop and waited for what was sure to come.<\/p>\n

Footsteps on the stairs. Doors flung wide. A swarming crowd of desperate faces, raised from some winter-long hibernation.<\/em><\/p>\n

***<\/center><\/p>\n

\u201cMum! Mum! Can we have some money?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor ice creams!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the ice cream van!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got a freezer full of ice creams,\u201d Agnes said. \u201cCan\u2019t you have one of those?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut they\u2019re not the same!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re exactly the same,\u201d Agnes said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ice cream van has more.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd they\u2019re bigger!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd colder!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are not colder.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey are!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd they might have some new ones!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year they had some we\u2019d never seen before!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were horrible<\/em>!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, our ones aren\u2019t horrible,\u201d Agnes said. \u201cI got the ones we all like.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we\u2019ve been good, Mum!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cReally good!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou said if we\u2019d been good we could have an ice cream!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the ice cream van!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t remember saying that at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, you did!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou definitely<\/em> did!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, okay,\u201d Agnes said, fishing out some small change from the pockets of her jeans and dropping it into their grasping mitts. \u201cBut don\u2019t just buy the ones we\u2019ve got in the freezer!\u201d<\/p>\n

***<\/center><\/p>\n

Footsteps in the hall. Doors slamming shut behind them. Cries of excitement fading out down the street.<\/em><\/p>\n

***<\/center><\/p>\n

Agnes sat down at the table and sighed. Of all the things in all the worlds, the continued existence of ice cream vans was the thing she understood the least.\f<\/p>\n
