{"id":908,"date":"2023-01-06T18:16:44","date_gmt":"2023-01-06T18:16:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/?p=908"},"modified":"2023-01-06T18:18:38","modified_gmt":"2023-01-06T18:18:38","slug":"merry-go-round-1923","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/2023\/01\/06\/merry-go-round-1923\/","title":{"rendered":"Merry-Go-Round (1923)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Merry-Go-Round<\/em> is a 1923 film directed by Erich von Stroheim and Rupert Julian, starring Norman Kerry as the marvellously named Count Hohenegg, who falls in love with Mary Philbin&#8217;s beautiful organ grinder at the local fair.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/merrygoround001s.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"608\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-909\" srcset=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/merrygoround001s.png 800w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/merrygoround001s-300x228.png 300w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/merrygoround001s-768x584.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This was intended to be Erich von Stroheim&#8217;s follow up to the magnificent <a href=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/2022\/07\/09\/foolish-wives-1922\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Foolish Wives<\/a>, and indeed shares a lot in terms of themes and plot, but after a troubled start to production, von Stroheim was fired, as described in this pretty amazing sentence from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Merry-Go-Round_(1923_film)\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the article on wikipedia<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;After a number of delays in filming, including the derailment of a prop streetcar, the overloading of the studio electrical system due to excessive night shooting, an inebriated lead man, the general disaffection of the extras, and delays caused by a search for an appropriate orangutan, the upper echelon at Universal mobilized against von Strohiem, and Thalberg was authorized to terminate von Stroheim as director.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/merrygoround004s.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"439\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-912\" srcset=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/merrygoround004s.png 800w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/merrygoround004s-300x227.png 300w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/merrygoround004s-768x582.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After that he was replaced with Rupert Julian (who later directed the Lon Chaney version of The Phantom of The Opera in 1925), and whether that&#8217;s the cause or not, Merry-Go-Round&#8217;s kind of limp and lifeless, and fairly disappointing, especially in comparison to Foolish Wives. <\/p>\n<p>Although as much of the strength of that is in Erich von Stroheim&#8217;s performance, maybe it wasn&#8217;t his sacking as director which was the problem but their refusal to hire him as an actor. His replacement here, Norman Kerry, is hilariously inert as a leading man, which kind of undermines the romance angle entirely here.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/merrygoround002s.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"444\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-910\" srcset=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/merrygoround002s.png 800w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/merrygoround002s-300x230.png 300w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/merrygoround002s-768x588.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, having said that, it&#8217;s not all bad.
