{"id":88,"date":"2019-12-08T20:52:10","date_gmt":"2019-12-08T20:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/?p=88"},"modified":"2019-12-08T20:52:10","modified_gmt":"2019-12-08T20:52:10","slug":"fantasmagorie-1908-le-cauchemar-de-fantoche-1908-un-drame-chez-les-fantoches-1908","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/2019\/12\/08\/fantasmagorie-1908-le-cauchemar-de-fantoche-1908-un-drame-chez-les-fantoches-1908\/","title":{"rendered":"Fantasmagorie (1908) \/ Le cauchemar de Fantoche (1908) \/ Un drame chez les fantoches (1908)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Fantasmagorie<\/em>, <em>Le cauchemar de Fantoche<\/em> (<em>The Puppet&#8217;s Nightmare<\/em>) and <em>Un drame chez les Fantoches<\/em> (<em>The Puppet&#8217;s Drama<\/em>) are three early animated films, all directed by the groundbreaking <em>Emile Cohl<\/em>, a French artist and animator who was once a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Incoherents\">Incoherents<\/a> art movement, an excellently named precursor of the Surrealists.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/fantasmagorie001s.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"655\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-89\" srcset=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/fantasmagorie001s.png 800w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/fantasmagorie001s-300x246.png 300w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/fantasmagorie001s-768x629.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Both <em>Fantasmagorie<\/em> (pictured above) and <em>Le cauchemar de Fantoche<\/em> (pictured below) are essentially a constant stream of visual improvisations, as the simple stick figures and line drawings transform and morph unpredictably through a series of surrealist imagery and interactions for a couple of minutes. They&#8217;re utterly wonderful.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/cauchemar001s.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"588\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-99\" srcset=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/cauchemar001s.png 800w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/cauchemar001s-300x221.png 300w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/cauchemar001s-768x564.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That same year, Emile Cohl followed these up with <em>Un drame chez les fantoches<\/em>, a slightly more complex cartoon, in terms of plot, at least, in that it actually has a story. Unfortunately, it loses something in terms of the sheer energy and imagination of his first two, although it still has a couple of nice sequences in it, too (like the wonderful snake, shown below, which looks fairly like <a href=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/things\/2019\/02\/15\/mouths\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the sort of creature I like to draw<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/fantoches001s.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"545\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-91\" srcset=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/fantoches001s.png 800w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/fantoches001s-300x204.png 300w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/fantoches001s-768x523.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>__________<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> <em>I watched all of these on youtube &#8211; Fantasmagorie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qa7TC8QhIMY\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, Le cauchemar de Fantoche <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7QboS3xL42M\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, and Un drame chez les fantoches <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QpijTiY65cE\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> <em>Although Fantasmagorie is often said to be the first fully animated film, I&#8217;m pretty sure the &#8220;fully animated&#8221; distinction is added only so everyone can talk about this rather than the deadeningly awful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wGh6maN4l2I\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Humorous Phases Of Funny Faces<\/a>, which was directed a couple of years earlier by J.
