Notes<\/strong> <\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> I love waves.<\/em><\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> And watching waves.<\/em><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> These waves are all over a hundred years old.<\/em><\/p>\n

4.<\/strong> Lovely waves.<\/em><\/p>\n

5.<\/strong> Anyway, there’s shots from ten different films here, all of which I watched on the BFI Player.<\/em><\/p>\n

6.<\/strong> The first film, and the earliest, is Rough Sea At Dover<\/a>, from 1895.<\/em><\/p>\n

7.<\/strong> Which apparently fueled a boom in scenes of the sea.<\/em><\/p>\n

8.<\/strong> For which I am forever grateful.<\/em><\/p>\n

9.<\/strong> The second one is Breakers<\/a>, from 1896.<\/em><\/p>\n

10.<\/strong> It’s only 20 seconds long but it’s lovely.<\/em><\/p>\n

11.<\/strong> With a good selection of hats.<\/em><\/p>\n

12.<\/strong> Ship At Sea<\/a>, from 1898, and Four Warships In Rough Seas<\/a> (thought to be from 1897, but tagged 1900 on the BFI site) are two nice early examples of the pleasures of mouting a camera on a ship and letting the rise and fall of the sea around them induce seasickness in you from afar.<\/em><\/p>\n

13.<\/strong> Also for some reason Four Warships In Rough Seas Sea contains at least six warships.<\/em><\/p>\n

14.<\/strong> Presumably due to some sort of military misinformation campaign.<\/em><\/p>\n

15.<\/strong> Sea Breaking Against Some Rocks<\/a> (1898) and Rough Seas Breaking On Rocks<\/a> (1899) are astonishingly atmospheric depictions of the scenes described by their titles.<\/em><\/p>\n

16.<\/strong> Which is nice.<\/em><\/p>\n

17.<\/strong> I love them both quite a lot.<\/em><\/p>\n

18.<\/strong> And could watch them for hours rather than these scant minutes.<\/em><\/p>\n

19.<\/strong> There then follows two films called Rough Sea, both from 1900.<\/em><\/p>\n

20.<\/strong> Rough Sea #1<\/a> has a brick harbour wall in it.<\/em><\/p>\n

21.<\/strong> And Rough Sea #2 does not.<\/em><\/p>\n

22.<\/strong> If you absolutely need to differentiate between the two.<\/em><\/p>\n

23.<\/strong> Mostly I included these ones for completions sake.<\/em><\/p>\n

24.<\/strong> (I don’t know where the comma in completions sake should go so I’m leaving it out entirely)<\/em><\/p>\n

25.<\/strong> Rough Sea At Roker<\/a> (1901) is two minutes of not particular rough seas at all.<\/em><\/p>\n

26.<\/strong> I’ve seen bigger waves at Clacton.<\/em><\/p>\n

27.<\/strong> I’ve eeen bigger waves at Southend.<\/em><\/p>\n

28.<\/strong> But it’s still strangely comforting to watch.<\/em><\/p>\n

29.<\/strong> And the seas do look slightly rougher in the second minuter than the first.<\/em><\/p>\n

30.<\/strong> I’ll give them that.<\/em><\/p>\n

31.<\/strong> The final film is Waves At Southport<\/a>, from 1902.<\/em><\/p>\n

32.<\/strong> The first minute or so of this contains possibly the most sedate waves ever captured on film.<\/em><\/p>\n

33.<\/strong> But the second half cuts to a cacophony of seagulls.<\/em><\/p>\n

34.<\/strong> Seagulls being rougher than all the seas combined.<\/em><\/p>\n

35.<\/strong> They’ll eat the flesh from your bones<\/em><\/p>\n

36.<\/strong> And then the bones from your flesh<\/em><\/p>\n

37.<\/strong> Until there’s nothing left for you to give.<\/em><\/p>\n

38.<\/strong> I’m too scared to look at any more seas now.<\/em><\/p>\n

39.<\/strong> So let this be the end<\/em><\/p>\n

40.<\/strong> Of this little adventure.<\/em><\/p>\n
