Stuart Blackton and released in 1907) and <em>H\u00f4tel \u00c9lectrique<\/em> (which was directed by Segundo de Chom\u00f3n and released in 1908) are two variations on almost exactly the same theme (that theme being haunted hotels, where everything inside moves around in marvellous stop motion ways).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hauntedhotel001s.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"580\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hauntedhotel001s.png 800w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hauntedhotel001s-300x218.png 300w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hauntedhotel001s-768x557.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>The Haunted Hotel <\/em>mixes live action, stop motion (and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pixilation\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pixilation<\/a>) animation, as well as a bunch of other film trickery techniques, to create a series of short scenes where a weary traveller is haunted first by his dinner, then by a napkin, and finally by the entire room itself. It&#8217;s wonderful. Especially the end.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hauntedhotel004s.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"408\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hauntedhotel004s.png 800w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hauntedhotel004s-300x211.png 300w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hauntedhotel004s-768x540.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is one of the oldest surviving stop motion films (some of the same director&#8217;s earlier attempts are among the many lost), but it&#8217;s not only remarkably technically adept, but pretty funny too (I laughed at least three times in six minutes, which is fairly good going I reckon).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hauntedhotel006s.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"420\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-493\" srcset=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hauntedhotel006s.png 800w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hauntedhotel006s-300x217.png 300w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hauntedhotel006s-768x556.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>The Haunted Hotel<\/em> was so successful in Europe that apparently every film maker in France spent the next year trying to work out all of Blackton&#8217;s techniques (according to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Haunted_Hotel\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wikipedia<\/a>, at least), which is presumably how Segundo de Chom\u00f3n&#8217;s <em>H\u00f4tel \u00c9lectrique<\/em> came about.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hotel001s.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"605\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hotel001s.png 800w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hotel001s-300x227.png 300w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hotel001s-768x581.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>H\u00f4tel \u00c9lectrique<\/em> copies the basic template of the first film, but upgrades the setting from some dismal single room to a plush, posh French hotel, at the cutting edge of modernity. No expense is spared in providing the guests with the luxuries deserving of their class. Suitcases are unpacked, shoes are shined, hair is brushed, faces are shaved, all in perfect stop motion. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hotel002s.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"434\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hotel002s.png 800w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hotel002s-300x224.png 300w, https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/hotel002s-768x574.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In this film, though, it&#8217;s not ghosts pestering people, but electric automation. What starts off as smoothly gliding suitcases and carefully swirling razor blades devolves into chaos when the inevitably of technological failure rears its head and everything turns to horror.
