(1913)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Suspense<\/em> is a brisk ten-minute long home-invasion thriller, directed by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lois_Weber\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Lois Weber<\/a><\/em>, an acclaimed and prolific pioneer in early cinema, the majority of whose work has largely, unfortunately, been lost.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/suspense001.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"619\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/accumulationofthings.com\/100\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/suspense001.png 800w, 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Technically groundbreaking both in its use of split screen and the staging of its scenes (it&#8217;s hard to imagine how difficult the wing mirror car chase scene must have been to stage with an impossibly huge and cumbersome 1910s camera rig), <em>Suspense<\/em> is also beautifully filmed. <\/p>\n<p>There are a number of shots that are pretty much perfectly composed, despite over a century of being referenced, re-used (or just plain stolen) elsewhere potentially diluting their impact for people like us watching it now. \/><\/p>\n<p>__________<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> <em>I watched this on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zfgiUvBaosg\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">youtube<\/a>, on the Change Before Going Productions channel.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> <em>I really like the soundtrack they&#8217;ve added to this, composed by the artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.robbiekaye.com\/about-2\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Robbie Kaye<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> <em>This film is often described as Hitchcockian, although maybe we should respect causality at least vaguely and decide that it&#8217;s his films that should be termed Weberian.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> <em>I can&#8217;t say I&#8217;m a great fan of the slightly reactionary nature of the plot, but it&#8217;s not as if we&#8217;ve moved onto anything much more thoughtful in the century since.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> <em>Thanks again to<a href=\"https:\/\/vomvorton.co.uk\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> Vom Vorton<\/a> for recommending this film to
